Facial Pain

Most common facial pain syndromes comprising the trigeminal nerve are neuropathic in nature and include:

  • Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Trigeminal neuropathy : Trigeminal Deafferentiation Pain and Trigeminal Post Herpetic Neuralgia

Treatment

1. Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia and
2. Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia

Both conditions have the same treatment pathway:
pharmacological treatment (including anti-epileptic drugs)
→ radiofrequency treatment of the gasserian ganglion under electromagnetic neuro navigation guidance
→ surgery (micro vascular decompression)

3. Trigeminal neuropathy including Trigeminal Deafferentiation Pain and Trigeminal Post Herpetic Neuralgia
Treatment pathway is the same for both conditions: pharmacological treatment including opioids
→ radiofrequency treatment of peripheral nerves
→ stimulation of peripheral branches
→ motor cortex stimulation
